September 24 marks one of the darkest days in Kosovo’s history, as the Kosovo Police faced a terrorist attack.
Sergeant Afrim Bunjaku, a 50-year-old from Vushtrri, was killed in the attack. The father of three, Kosovo’s newest hero, was shot from two different directions near this bridge. As a result of the gunfire, two other police officers were injured.
In the early morning hours of that day, Prime Minister Albin Kurti announced that the sovereignty of the country was under attack in Banjska, Zveçan. He later informed the public about the killing of Sergeant Afrim Bunjaku and the wounding of two other police officers around 3:00 a.m.
Gunshots continued to be heard even after daylight broke, and the attack persisted.
Serbian terrorists in military uniforms had taken positions in the Banjska Monastery and the surrounding area. This group was led by Milan Radojičić, sanctioned by the United States and wanted by local institutions for his involvement in killings.
The confrontation with the Kosovo Police continued throughout the day on September 24. Police officer Alban Rashiti was injured, and officers Çlirim Shaqiri, Mirsad Kryeziu, and Sedat Dushi were wounded. Meanwhile, special forces killed three Serbs, but it was not until late Sunday night that the monastery was brought under control, while the majority of the terrorist group escaped through mountainous paths to the Republic of Serbia.
September 25 was declared a day of mourning for Kosovo.
