Twenty-four air traffic control employees of ‘Albcontrol’ have been taken to the police station following their decision on Wednesday to suspend their work at the Tirana International Airport.
Sources close to Euronews Albania say that most of them are being held inside the premises of the State Police General Directorate.
Some of the air traffic controllers were notified by phone and voluntarily went to the police station, while the others were escorted by police forces after midnight from a hotel near the airport, where they were staying since Tuesday afternoon.
The Tirana Prosecutor’s Office has launched investigations regarding the organized walkout, which resulted in dozens of canceled flights at the country’s one international airport.
Sixty-eight air traffic controllers went on a strike on Wednesday over their salaries which they claim have been cut by more than a half over the past year.
Minister of Infrastructure and Energy, Belinda Balluku, said during an interview for Euronews Albania that this strike is illegal, as air traffic control is considered as a vital sector.
Currently the Control Tower is under the supervision of the army.
