Data from the European Institute of Statistics rank Albania among the 30 countries with the highest number of asylum applications per capita.
France is the most sought-after country of destination for Albanians, renowned for its socially positive policies. In 2020, around 44% of the applications were filed in France, followed by those in Germany and Greece.
Last year, there were 471,000 applications, of which 416,000 were first-time applicants, Eurostat confirms.
Due to the pandemic, the number of asylum seekers, compared to figures from 2019, has declined. However, travel bans appear to not have an obstacle for the 6,600 Albanians willing to seek asylum in the European Union. Of these, 5,000 were younger than 35.
Experts believe that the economy and low confidence in the future propel the youth to migrate to developed countries, considering also the countries they are seeking shelter to.
From 2011 to 2020, around 202,000 Albanians have applied to live in one of the countries of the bloc. A record figure was logged in 2015 with 66,000 applicants, but since that year, the number of rejections has also increased, reaching an average rate of approval 1 per 32 applications.
