The Special Court convened today for the first time to review a defamation lawsuit filed by the leader of the Democratic Party Lulzim Basha against the Mayor of Tirana Erion Veliaj.

However, the trial was postponed to September, after Basha refused the conciliation hearing.

Mayor Veliaj did not attend the hearing and was represented by his attorney.

The High Court ruled that the trial fell under the competencies of the Special Court against Corruption after the latter initially said it did not have the authority.

Basha sued Veliaj for defamation in October 2020. During the electoral campaign ahead of the parliamentary polls, Veliaj accused the leader of the Democrats of having acquired four new apartments during the earthquake and the pandemic, as well as enlarging his apartment by building several stories above.
