National Theater to become property of the municipality of Tirana, decides government

The Albanian government has decided to pass the ownership of the land where the National Theatre once stood to the municipality of Tirana.

The draft was approved on Friday during a government meeting, led by deputy premier Erion Braçe, and it will enter into force after it is published in the Official Gazette.

Yesterday, Euronews Albania published the draft passing the property of the land to the municipality, with the argument that the ministry of culture has not anticipated funds for the construction of a new theater, as opposed to the municipality of Tirana.

Another argument is that the surrounding area is also owned by the municipality.

The Constitutional Court overturned a decree signed by the Council of Ministers in 2020, arguing that it had undermined the sovereignty of local governances and acted counter to principles of rule of law on the protection of natural heritage.
