Sources near Euronews Albania confirmed that the leader of the Democratic Party Lulzim Basha will meet today US Ambassador to Tirana Yuri Kim. The meeting is believed to take place at the party’s headquarters at 4 PM.

The last time that the top US diplomat in Albania met Basha was on July 30. Shortly after, Ambassador Kim spoke openly against Sali Berisha and called on the Democrats to keep away from one of the co-founders of the party.

“It would be a historical irony […] if the party were to eat grass for the personal interests of one man”, said Kim at the time.

Two months after, and one day before the formation of the new legislature, the chairman of Albania’s Democrats, announced his decision to expel Sali Berisha from the parliamentary group until he resolved the legal feud with the US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken.

On May 19, the Department of State designated Berisha “persona-non-grata” for allegedly “undermining democracy” and “high-level corruption”.

Berisha has since then referred to the decision as “baseless” and “politically motivated”, and consequently, he took the case to the Correctional Court of Paris.

Berisha, one of the co-founders of the Democratic Party, has criticized Basha, calling him “a hostage of the prime minister’s interests”. Recently, Berisha launched an initiative to call in DP’s National Assembly, in order to question Basha’s seat as party leader.
