During an official visit to Belgrade in line with the Western Balkans Rail Summit, the Minister of Infrastructure and Energy, Belinda Balluku, spoke about ongoing projects in Albania.

“When we talk about reconstructing the Tirana-Durres railway, the construction of the new segment initially requires building capacities in order to also be able to work on other projects”, Balluku said.

The Western Balkans Rail Summit, organized by the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) brings together members of the Transport Community, international financial institutions as well as heads of state in order to enhance the integration of the Western Balkans rail system with the EU rail system.

Minister Balluku explained that the Tirana-Durres railway will connect the country to Montenegro, although adding that additional building capacities are required.

“We have a very important project. In fact, it is the first cross-border project, because it is about a railway that goes all the way to the border crossing with Montenegro. And the same goes to all other projects on the table at the moment”, said the infrastructure minister.

In February, Albania signed a contract with Italian company INC for the rehabilitation of the Tirana-Durres railway consisting of a 37-kilometer route, connecting the country’s capital with the main port.
