Europol seizes €63 million euros and arrests 544 over counterfeit pills and doping

544 individuals have been arrested following a 9-month investigation by Europol over the trafficking of fake pills and doping substances.

The operation was stretched across 27 countries, 20 of which were in Europe, where law enforcement discovered 5 illegal laboratories that manufactured counterfeit pills.
The report underlined that in order to maximize profits, traffickers would spread around fake anti-COVID cures and treatments as well as forge medical equipment and disinfectants.

Meanwhile, the criminal groups would also traffic doping substances and various other medicaments like prescription pills used in the treatment of cancer, erectile dysfunction, pain killers and antiviral drugs.

After production, the counterfeit products would then be sold online through 283 websites advertising them on the internet.

“1 029 webpages were monitored [during investigations]. 1 397 hearings have been initiated,” – stated the Europol report.

The total value of the products confiscated during this operation was €63 million euros and the number of tablets and doping substances reached well over 25 million.
Moreover, 33 organized crime groups were involved in the investigations and 37 different companies.

EU member states involved: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain.

Other countries: Bosnia and Hercegovina, Columbia, Georgia, North Macedonia, Norway, Switzerland and the United States.
