Member of the Executive Council of SDSM in North Macedonia, Muhamed Zekiri said on Euronews Albania’s ‘Balkan Talks’ that there were several factors that contributed to the party’s major letdown in the local elections.

Zekiri noted that the defeat came as a result of internal debates and the poor job done by candidates. In addition, he said that the presence of a separate race of major parties played another role in their loss.

“These elections were seen as a referendum. For the first time, SDSM allowed several political subjects to race individually, which resulted in them taking a large number of votes away from SDSM,” – added Zekiri.

In regards to Zoran Zaev’s resignation as prime minister and chair of SDSM, Zekiri said that this won’t mean that they’ll lose the majority in Parliament.

“He came out with a declaration that he would resign if he lost Skopje, something which ended up happening and was followed with a declaration of resignation, but this doesn’t mean that we’ll lose majority in Parliament and this was proved,” – continued the SDSM official.

According to him, Zaev should stay in office in order to ensure a parliamentary majority, and only then should he resign.

“I believe this will take place by the end of December or after the end-of-year celebrations in January when we will have a new party chair and new prime minister,” – said Zekiri.
