{"id":10857,"date":"2021-04-20T08:45:05","date_gmt":"2021-04-20T08:45:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/euronews.al\/en\/?p=10857"},"modified":"2021-04-20T08:52:50","modified_gmt":"2021-04-20T08:52:50","slug":"2021-world-press-freedom-index-journalism-in-albania-problematic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/euronews.al\/en\/2021-world-press-freedom-index-journalism-in-albania-problematic\/","title":{"rendered":"2021 World Press Freedom Index: Journalism in Albania problematic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The international non-profit organization promoting media freedom and the right to be informed, Reporters Without Borders (RSF) indicates in its latest <a href=\"https:\/\/rsf.org\/en\/2021-world-press-freedom-index-journalism-vaccine-against-disinformation-blocked-more-130-countries\">report<\/a> that journalism in Albania is currently in a problematic state.<\/p>\n<p>It also underlined that the COVID-19 pandemic has been used to block journalists\u2019 access to sources of information.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe 2021 World Press Freedom Index compiled by Reporters Without Borders (RSF) shows that journalism, the main vaccine against disinformation, is completely or partially blocked in 73% of the 180 countries ranked by the organization\u201d, says RSF.<\/p>\n<p>Both Albania and its neighbors were categorized as problematic countries.<\/p>\n<p>Albania is referred to as a country where journalism is not \u201ctrusted\u201d and ranked 83 out of 180, improving by a single point from last year.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, Kosovo was placed as 78, ranking much better than Albania, however losing 8 points from last year\u2019s report.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, North Macedonia has made progress from last year climbing two spots in the classification.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThreat from defamation law\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the report, RSF mentions the controversial \u201cDefamation Law\u201d approved by the Albanian government despite criticisms from various NGOs as well as recommendations of the Venice Commission.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, RSF notes that many media suffered losses in revenue, particularly following pandemic-related measures such as banning no more than 2 people in a studio at the same time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the start of the coronavirus crisis, Prime Minister Edi Rama urged the public to \u201cprotect themselves against the media\u201d and refused to help when the pandemic exacerbated the media\u2019s financial problems to the point that newspapers stopped producing print editions for about six weeks\u201d, recalled the report.<\/p>\n<p><strong>YOU MIGHT ALSO LIKE<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"title-post\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/euronews.al\/en\/albania\/2021\/02\/04\/young-people-exhibit-high-levels-of-trust-for-opposition-and-online-medias\/\">Young people exhibit high levels of trust for opposition and online medias<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"title-post\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/euronews.al\/en\/albania\/2020\/12\/10\/ep-foreign-affairs-committee-discusses-on-albania-s-progress-bunguri-constitutional-court-and-media-law-key-requirements\/\">EP Foreign Affairs Committee on Albania\u2019s progress, Bunguri: Constitutional Court and Media Law, preconditions for first IGC<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"title-post\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/euronews.al\/en\/albania\/2020\/11\/19\/time-to-begin-consultations-for-the-revised-draft-of-the-media-law-says-eu-ambassador-soreca\/\">Time to begin consultations on the revised draft of the Media Law, says EU Ambassador Soreca<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div>\n<div class=\"spot-im-replies-count\" data-post-id=\"18995\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The international non-profit organization promoting media freedom and the right to be informed, Reporters Without Borders (RSF) indicates in its latest report that journalism in Albania is currently in a problematic state.
