On Sunday, Albania logged the lowest number of infections in the last ten months, suggesting that the epidemiological situation may be heading towards normalization.<\/p>\n

Authorities reported 53 new cases and 1 victim in 24 hours. The comparatively low figure is a first since last year at the beginning of July, while the last time that the country logged one coronavirus-related death was at the beginning of October.<\/p>\n

These figures indicate that the epidemiological situation is currently under control, however public health care experts are still prudent to “declare an early victory ” and stand on guard fearing rising figures following gatherings witnessed during the electoral campaign.<\/p>\n

Euronews Albania journalist Dorina Halili reported that there only two functioning hospitals out of four operating during the peak of the pandemic. According to figures provided by the health ministry, there are 124 patients receiving medical treatment.<\/p>\n

Arben Gjata, Rector of the University of Medicine, told Euronews Albania that he feels \u201chopeful\u201d that if this trend persists, in addition to proceeding with fast vaccination rates, the situation may be finally heading to normal.<\/p>\n

As of today, authorities have injected around 500.000 vaccine doses, with at least 21.000 citizens getting both jabs.<\/p>\n

Data analyzed from Euronews Albania confirm what the experts are saying. In April, the country logged 155 deaths and a total of 5.679 new COVID-19 cases, almost 3 times less than in March, which remains the deadliest month from the onset of the pandemic.<\/p>\n

It is worth noting that authorities carried out 15.000 tests less in March however the incidence rate was also lower.<\/p>\n

In April, active cases dropped by 12,773 while 80% of active infections have been detected in Tirana.<\/p>\n

The head of the National Emergency Services, Sk\u00ebnder Brataj, said during an interview for Euronews Albania that a rising trend might be seen by the middle of May, but \u201cit will not be similar with the waves experienced in the past months\u201d while assuring citizens that the healthcare system is prepared and the situation is under control.<\/p>\n
