{"id":1362,"date":"2019-11-20T12:22:04","date_gmt":"2019-11-20T12:22:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/website.euronews.al\/en\/i-pakategorizuar\/2019\/11\/20\/i-am-breaking-inside-says-zaev-in-a-new-york-times-interview\/"},"modified":"2019-11-20T12:22:04","modified_gmt":"2019-11-20T12:22:04","slug":"i-am-breaking-inside-says-zaev-in-a-new-york-times-interview","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/euronews.al\/en\/i-am-breaking-inside-says-zaev-in-a-new-york-times-interview\/","title":{"rendered":"\u201cI am breaking inside\u201d says PM Zaev after the French veto on EU accession talks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\">At the last European Council Meeting on October 17-18<sup style=\"background-color: inherit; color: inherit; font-family: inherit;\">th<\/sup>, French President Emmanuel Macron used France\u2019s veto, in order to prevent Albania and North Macedonia from being given a start date for accession talks.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">France was joined by Denmark and the Netherlands in opposing Tirana\u2019s candidacy and went out of its way in blocking Skopje\u2019s accession talks as well.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The French President argues, that the EU enlargement process needs a major overhaul before talks can begin with the prospective member states.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Prime Minister of North Macedonia Zoran Zaev, has succeeded in resolving an approximately a three-decades-long, name dispute with Greece. This was supposed to pave the way, for North Macedonia&#8217;s accession talks with the European Union.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">After France&#8217;s Veto, which shook the whole region&#8217;s \u2018status quo\u2019\u2014PM Zaev called for snap elections and said he would step down from his role as Prime Minister of North Macedonia. In an interview with the New York Times, PM Zaev said, he \u201cis breaking inside\u201d and that the veto \u201cdestroyed him personally and emotionally.\u201d PM Zaev expressed concern, not only about North Macedonia\u2014but also, for the stability of the Western Balkans in general.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">According to PM Zaev, \u201cnationalism and radicalism\u201d in the Western Balkans could rise again, starting new conflicts and reviving old wounds from decades past.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>At the last European Council Meeting on October 17-18th, French President Emmanuel Macron used France\u2019s veto, in order to prevent Albania and North Macedonia from being given a start date for accession talks.
