Soon, Albania is expecting to receive the role of a non-permanent member state in the Security Council of the United Nations \u2013 an organization, our country has been a part of since December 15th<\/sup> 1955. The Albanian Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Olta Xha\u00e7ka stated that despite the fact that there will be a voting process, Albania is guaranteed a place because it is the only candidate in the group of Eastern European countries.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlbania is part of the Eastern Europe group and at this point, it is with the consensus of all members that Albania will be the only candidate and a consensual one. This means that our selection is certain. This is not because it\u2019s our turn but because there has been accordance and a long lobbying process, which is why Albania deserves to receive the support of all countries in its group,\u201d declared Minister Xha\u00e7ka.<\/p>\n

The Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs also stated that this is mainly a result of the lobbying process and the role Albania has played through its foreign politics.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe truly have our merits regarding this position, because it is a position that we are receiving thanks to a long lobbying process as well as Albania\u2019s trustworthiness in regards to our foreign politics, diplomacy, our foreign prestige, bilateral as well as multilateral collaboration as well as our contribution to peace during UN\u2019s missions, as well as NATO\u2019s and EU\u2019s missions,\u201d added Xha\u00e7ka.<\/p>\n

The Security Council of UN, one of the highest bodies of the UN is made up of 15 countries, 5 permanent ones with the power to veto \u2013 namely the US, Russia, China, Great Britain and France \u2013 and 10 temporary members that are chosen by the General Parliamentary Assembly of the UN.<\/p>\n

For Albania, \u2013 said Xha\u00e7ka \u2013 this means that we will be able to make important decisions at an important round table and our foreign politics will meet another level of importance and prestige. Meanwhile, Albania will also have the chance to create closer rapports and collaborations with several truly powerful countries.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt means negotiating regarding important decisions, which in turn also means being able to elevate the importance of your own country in the international arena,\u201d stated Xha\u00e7ka.<\/p>\n

The Chief Diplomat of Albania also spoke on the recognition of Kosovo, as being one of our national interests and this new role in the Security Council of the UN will be a chance to further our work and efforts toward this goal as well.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe independence of Kosovo is a strategic interest of our foreign politics, and it is a national interest for Albania. We have been important actors in the advancement of this objective for Kosovo that is absolutely ours as well, and we will continue to do the same, even during this important duty, in order to be an additional voice and to be a representative for all Albanians at this roundtable,\u201d declared Xha\u00e7ka.<\/p>\n

The Albanian MFA emphasized that \u201cI don\u2019t believe that the matter of Kosovo will be resolved through Russia and China or through the Security Council but rather through the dialogue Kosovo-Serbia, which is also being supported by the US and the EU\u201d.<\/p>\n

Albania will be represented in the permanent mission of the UN, through ambassador Besiana Kadara and her team, as well as a group of experts that will be joining our group. 15 experts will be Albanian but there will also be important additions from our allies, in areas we might need their collaboration in.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnother priority of Albania at the Security Council of the UN will be respecting the rights of women as a contribution to peace and security, the respect of human rights and international law, the war against extremism and terrorism, climate change, environmental degradation, etc.,\u201d ended Xha\u00e7ka.<\/p>\n

Voting will take place on June 11th<\/sup> in the General Assembly of the UN, and at the beginning of January work is set to officially begin and wrap up after 2 years.<\/p>\n
