Albania has been elected as a temporary member of the UN Security Council for 2022-2023.<\/p>\n

190 states voted overall, of which 175 in favor of Albania\u2019s bid to the Security Council.<\/p>\n

For the first time in the country\u2019s 65 years membership, the selection is being seen widely as a positive opportunity for Albania.<\/p>\n

Albania will take over the mandate in January 2022. The Security Council is among the most important organs in the United Nations, tasked to preserve peace and security.<\/p>\n

Although there was a voting process, Albania’s place as a temporary member was guaranteed this time as no other country in Eastern Europe was running for the post.<\/div>\n

The Security Council of UN, one of the highest bodies of the UN is made up of 15 countries, 5 permanent ones with the power to veto \u2013 namely the US, Russia, China, Great Britain and France \u2013 and 10 temporary members that are chosen by the General Parliamentary Assembly of the UN.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

In 1963, the General Assembly decided to allocate five posts to African and Asian states, one from an Eastern Europe state, two to Latin American states as well as another two to Western European states.<\/div>\n

Earlier this month, Foreign Affairs Minister Olta Xha\u00e7ka told journalist Ilva Tare that the country has conducted a long lobbying process for the post.<\/div>\n

For Albania, \u2013 said Xha\u00e7ka \u2013 this means that we will be able to make important decisions at an important round table and our foreign politics will meet another level of importance and prestige. Meanwhile, Albania will also have the chance to create closer rapports and collaborations with several truly powerful countries.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt means negotiating regarding important decisions, which in turn also means being able to elevate the importance of your own country in the international arena,\u201d stated Xha\u00e7ka.<\/p>\n

Reactions from state authorities and heads of diplomatic missions in the country<\/strong><\/p>\n

Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama referred to the recent development as \u201cgood news\u201d adding that the decision was taken after receiving 175 out of 117 votes necessary.<\/p>\n

President Ilir Meta expressed certainty that the country will succeed in fulfilling all challenges.<\/p>\n
