{"id":17596,"date":"2021-07-18T12:29:01","date_gmt":"2021-07-18T10:29:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/euronews.al\/en\/?p=17596"},"modified":"2021-07-18T12:34:06","modified_gmt":"2021-07-18T10:34:06","slug":"discover-the-cobblestoned-alleyways-of-gjirokaster-graced-with-history-and-charm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/euronews.al\/en\/discover-the-cobblestoned-alleyways-of-gjirokaster-graced-with-history-and-charm\/","title":{"rendered":"Discover the cobblestoned alleyways of Gjirokaster, graced with history and charm"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Known for its cobblestoned roads, stone houses, or its <strong>Grand Castle<\/strong> that offers a view of the entire city, Gjirokastra has a lot to offer visitors, \u2013 from historical monuments to artisanal crafts, \u2013 so stick around with Euronews Albania\u2019s latest summer series \u2018Travellers\u2019, exploring Albania from its northernmost peak to its southernmost tip.<\/p>\n<p>The city of Gjirokaster is part of UNESCO\u2019s list of World Heritage Sites, as one of the few cities built in Ottoman style that has survived in the Balkans, whereas the origin of the name itself has historians and etymologists yet to settle on a final official version.<\/p>\n<p>Legend has it that during the Ottoman conquest of the city, Princess Argjiro threw herself from the walls of the castle, accompanied by her son, so that she wouldn\u2019t fall in the hands of the enemy. This is where they say that name of the \u2018<strong>Castle of Argjiro<\/strong>\u2019 originated from.
