The leader of the Democratic Party Lulzim Basha said that Albania is being kept \u201chostage from the most corrupted government throughout Europe\u201d, which according to him is working against the interests of the majority.<\/p>\n

These were his remarks during the National Assembly meeting of the Democratic Party.<\/p>\n

In addition, party members unanimously voted to elect the four new deputy leaders, namely Jorida Tabaku, Grida Duma, Alfred Rushaj, and Enkelejd Alibeaj.<\/p>\n

Basha blamed widespread corruption for the massive migration of Albanian citizens, adding that the last parliamentary elections served to repudiate any changes.<\/p>\n

He also called on the members of the National Assembly, as well as other party representatives, to become the \u201cvoice of the citizens\u201d, and stressed that the Democrats had the entire state, oligarchs, and organized crime against them.<\/p>\n

He did not go over any specifics or recent developments that have taken place within the party but stated that state propaganda is trying to depict them as \u201cweak\u201d and in the \u201cmidst of a crisis\u201d.<\/p>\n

Basha referred to the National Assembly meeting as the \u201cfirst phase of an interior reform\u201d which will serve to \u201csuccessfully battle the corrupted regime\u201d.<\/p>\n

The leader of the Democrats said that the constitutional amendments carried out in 2008 no longer serve the needs of establishing a more solid democracy, checks and balances, and pointed out the necessity of having an electoral and territorial reform.<\/p>\n

Amendments in 2008 were reached after a consensus between then PM Sali Berisha while current PM Edi Rama was in opposition.<\/p>\n

The main essence of the agreement was altering the electoral system, from direct election to regional proportional which remains in force to this day.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the amends to the electoral system came after an agreement between the Socialists and the Democrats. After coming to power, Rama unilaterally passed an administrative reform separating Albania in 61 municipalities.<\/p>\n
