2020 came to an end with a double-murder that shocked public opinion after a man killed two sisters, Zhaneta Metani and Kristina Bardhi.<\/p>\n

But even the year after came along with similar alarming femicide figures, according to activists promoting human rights in Albania.<\/p>\n

In the past 9 months, 16 girls and women died at the hands of their husbands, partners or sometimes even family members.<\/p>\n

According to police data, the weapon of choice were firearms and knives.<\/p>\n

Of the sixteen, twelve women lived in Albania, while the other four resided in Greece, Italy, and the United States.<\/p>\n

The reason behind their brutal killings seems to have taken the proportions of an epidemy, with most perpetrators admitting to prosecutors that they took away these women\u2019s lives over economic problems, or because they would not accept divorce.<\/p>\n

A few days ago, on the evening of September 11, another case was recorded in the village of Zhupan in Fier, where a 23-year-old was shot dead by her ex-husband while she was at her parent\u2019s home.<\/p>\n

In wake of the tragic event, activists will be taking the streets and rally in front of the Interior Ministry to raise awareness and seek accountability from authorities in taking concrete measures to prevent similar occurrences as well as ask for maximum punishments.<\/p>\n
