Figures on violence against women in Vlora have reached alarming rates in the district of Vlora. Referring to the police load on domestic violence calls as well as court cases, figures have seen a steady rise.<\/p>\n
In 2020, there were 149 domestic violence complaints filed, as well as 208 requests for protective orders.<\/p>\n
This year, from January to October, domestic violence complaints reached 160.<\/p>\n
A majority of these cases were taken up by the district court.<\/p>\n
Vlora\u2019s District Court revealed that from January to September it had issued 103 emergency protective orders, 95 restraining orders. In addition, from 39 criminal proceedings related to domestic violence offenses, 25 have been arrested, 3 are in house arrest and 1 was released on probation.<\/p>\n
But what are the causes behind these concerning figures?<\/p>\n
The two main factors are isolation as a result of the pandemic and problems with executing protective orders.<\/p>\n
Malvina Mejdiaj, an attorney, recounts that every year there are over 300 cases of domestic violence, adding that it is now up to the police to oversee and review these cases.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s been some amendments on the domestic violence law, with the most recent taken on November 2020, which included a very important measure for protecting victims, such as issuing preliminary protective orders\u201d.<\/p>\n
Violence at a young age, difficult economic conditions, property disputes, and jealousy remain the main causes that spur domestic violence on a gender basis, said Rezarta Andoni for Euronews Albania, the coordinator against domestic violence from the Vlora town hall.<\/p>\n
760 complaints have been filed in Vlora from 2015 to 2021, while the toll of the requests for restraining orders has reached 1,392.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
