Today, the Constitutional Court will be examining president Ilir Meta\u2019s impeachment trial, in order to come out with a verdict on the legitimacy of this decision made in Parliament last year. The court hearing began at 10:00 a.m.<\/p>\n

In June 2021, 104 MPs voted in favor of impeaching president Meta. The Socialist supermajority blames Meta for coming out with public statements that were clearly biased and showed support for the Democratic Party before the general elections of April 2021.<\/p>\n

According to Socialist lawmakers, Meta violated the Constitution by openly siding with one of the parties participating in the elections.<\/p>\n

The Parliament vote was based on the report findings drafted by an Inquiry Commission, which was tasked with investigating president Meta\u2019s stances and behavior during the electoral campaigns leading up to the April elections.<\/p>\n

Meta has declared that he considers the decision to impeach him unconstitutional but through a public message posted on his social media page, the head of state has announced that his defense team will be showing up in today\u2019s hearing at the Constitutional Court.<\/p>\n

In an interview<\/a> <\/strong>for Euronews Albania several days ago, president Meta said that he won\u2019t participate in his impeachment hearing but that he won\u2019t boycott the process, by sending his defense team instead.<\/p>\n
