{"id":30727,"date":"2022-02-01T17:30:05","date_gmt":"2022-02-01T16:30:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/euronews.al\/en\/?p=30727"},"modified":"2022-02-01T20:53:07","modified_gmt":"2022-02-01T19:53:07","slug":"what-happens-if-president-meta-is-impeached-today","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/euronews.al\/en\/what-happens-if-president-meta-is-impeached-today\/","title":{"rendered":"What happens if President Meta is impeached?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gjk.gov.al\/web\/Gjykata_Kushtetuese_1_1.php\">Constitutional Court<\/a> will rule on Tuesday whether President Ilir Meta violated the highest law in the land, the Constitution.<\/p>\n<p>In case the Court proves the allegations raised by the ruling parliamentarian majority, then Meta will get impeached.<\/p>\n<p>If not, Meta will stay in office until 29 April 2022.<\/p>\n<p>If the president is impeached, Meta will immediately be stripped of his competencies, and his post is filled by the Speaker of the Assembly.<\/p>\n<p>Meta was appointed President on 28 April 2017 with 87 votes in favor from both SP and SMI.<\/p>\n<p>Albanian presidents have a 5-year term and their role is generally honorary.<\/p>\n<p>Meta\u2019s actions have many times given rise to disputes with the government of PM Edi Rama.<\/p>\n<p>The Albanian judicial system maintains that the verdict of the Constitutional Court cannot be appealed.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview for Euronews Albania, President Meta <a href=\"https:\/\/euronews.al\/en\/programs\/now\/2022\/01\/26\/meta-i-wont-show-up-for-my-impeachment-hearing-at-the-constitutional-court\/\">said<\/a> that he will take his case to the arbitrage if he\u2019s dismissed.<\/p>\n<p>However, the Constitution does not have a precedent on which it can rely upon in case the President is impeached.<\/p>\n<p>The only prediction is: In case impossibility is proved, the seat of the President remains vacant and the election of the new President starts within 10 days from the day of the proof of impossibility.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the procedure for the selection of a new president must start no later than 60 days before the expiration of the mandate.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, even if Meta does not get dismissed, the procedure for his replacement will roll over in February.<\/p>\n<p>Meta has previously declared that he doesn&#8217;t want another mandate, although the Constitution allows his reelection.<\/p>\n<p>The Albanian President was impeached by a majority vote in parliament on 9 June 2021.<\/p>\n<p><strong>YOU MIGHT ALSO LIKE<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"title-post\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/euronews.al\/en\/albania\/2022\/02\/01\/metas-laywers-call-for-new-impartial-judges-in-their-clients-impeachment-trial\/\">Meta\u2019s lawyers call for new \u2018impartial\u2019 judges in impeachment trial<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li class=\"title-post\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/euronews.al\/en\/albania\/2022\/01\/29\/president-meta-writes-to-constitutional-court-ahead-of-potential-impeachment\/\">President Meta addresses Constitutional Court ahead of impeachment ruling<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Constitutional Court will rule on Tuesday whether President Ilir Meta violated the highest law in the land, the Constitution.
