The number of vehicles circulating in Albania has increased. It appears that over 711,000 cars are unbothered by rising fuel prices.<\/p>\n

20% of them were imported in the last 3 years, mainly from Germany and Italy. This means that Albanians bought more cars during the pandemic.<\/p>\n

73 percent of them run on diesel, while cars that use gasoline are 4 times fewer in numbers. Vehicles manufactured before 2005 are predominant in Albania.<\/p>\n

A car running on fuel emits over 560 grams of CO2 per kilometer. 398 tons of carbon dioxide are produced if we add up all vehicles running in Albania. One ton of carbon dioxide equals giant cannon 10 meters in diameter.<\/p>\n

Ernisa Caka, an expert from the Environmental Protection Agency said that cars are the biggest polluters in Albania.<\/p>\n

Despite luxurious brands roaming the streets, more than 60% of the vehicles in the country are over 17 years old. Only 4% were produced in the last 7 years, of them, not even 1% make up for electric cars.<\/p>\n

Electric vehicles are mainly used by large companies or taxis. Sara Shehu, a sales manager from Vodafone, switched to electric cars.<\/p>\n

\u201cI charge it once a week and I drive more than 200 kilometers\u201d, Sara says.<\/p>\n

Charging stations mainly work if you have a card of the company that has set them up. The public ones are fewer in number and are usually located in Tirana.<\/p>\n

The European Union aims to ban the sale<\/a> of cars running on fuel by 2035 and urges to boost the production of electric cars. Meanwhile, their sale scored a record last year.<\/p>\n
