NATO\u2019s special air force operation against Serbia\u2019s aggression in Kosovo took place exactly 23 years ago \u2013 on March 24, 1999.<\/p>\n

This important move marked the end of the Kosovo War and a conflict that lasted 78 days and took the lives of hundreds of innocent civilians.<\/p>\n

This is also the day when hope started to be revived amongst Kosovo citizens that freedom and sovereignty were finally starting to seem close.<\/p>\n

NATO\u2019s airstrike against Serbian forces was followed by the Agreement of Kumanova, which many have also considered a capitulation of Serbia.<\/p>\n

A few days later, the Security Council of the United Nations adopted the 1244 Resolution, through which Kosovo is officially put under the administration of the United Nations Mission.<\/p>\n

On February 17, 2008, Kosovo finally declared its independence.<\/p>\n

Around 50,000 KFOR troops from 36 different countries, of whom 30,000 from NATO member states, have been deployed in Kosovo since 1999.<\/p>\n

Nowadays, a much smaller number of NATO forces, continue their peace-keeping operation in Kosovo.<\/p>\n
