If you promise an investment of \u20ac5 million and employ over 80 people in the tourism sector, you may be granted a strategic investor status<\/a><\/strong> in Albania.<\/p>\n

Apart from tourism, the same status can be awarded in several other sectors, including energy, infrastructure, agriculture, and technological areas of economic development.<\/p>\n

However, investors have their eyes mainly on tourism and place particular focus on Albania\u2019s coastline.<\/p>\n

Upon being granted the strategic investor status, the state guarantees land property, roads, sanitary sewer channels, as well as water and electrical supply.<\/p>\n

On special occasions, the state may even expropriate private property, as to pave the way to getting the project going.<\/p>\n

The investors then have a right to use Albania\u2019s coast and beach for 30 years.<\/p>\n

The majority of these investors have used the law to build private villas, which means that there is no substantial benefit for the tourism sector.<\/p>\n

The villas are sold and all profits go straight into the pockets of the building companies.<\/p>\n
