The Albanian Helsinki Committee (AHC) published a report<\/a><\/strong> on Friday saying the suicide of the 31-year-old at Kavaja Police Station could have been prevented.<\/p>\n

The young man was found hanging in an isolation cell with what was reported as shoelaces, after being arrested for theft.<\/p>\n

AHC noted that it had sent its own team to take a close look at the cell and security conditions where the victim spent the last moments of his life and accordingly, it did not fulfill the rightful criteria.<\/p>\n

AHC emphasized in its report that a supervising officer had submitted a report by the end of his shift, where he had warned that the young man could be suicidal.<\/p>\n

Despite that, no medical examinations were carried out, resulting in a breach of the actual criminal code.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe note was signed by P.B before leaving his shift, as well as by G.H, the police officer that took over the shift as supervisor\u201d, reads the report.<\/p>\n

Another controversial piece of evidence is that the officers who carried out the body check at the moment of the arrest did not report any laces, neither on the victim\u2019s shoes or sweater.<\/p>\n

The death ruled as a suicide of the 31-year-old on Thursday sparked a massive public outcry over jail conditions and the way detainees are treated at the hands of law enforcement officers.<\/p>\n
