All eyes have been on SPAK in the last three weeks, be that from the general public but also from the political scene.<\/p>\n
This saturated attention comes as a result of various hot files it is looking into, as well as cases mentioned in public by the Albanian Prime Minister.<\/p>\n
Among other things, the Special Prosecution Office is also looking at the handling procedures of the Tirana waste incinerator.<\/p>\n
Some of the main allegations that have surfaced are over abuse of office, exerting influence on public functionaries, and corruption.<\/p>\n
SPAK is also investigating the procedures followed by various institutions that dealt with the contract of the capital\u2019s waste management site.<\/p>\n
A report from the State Supreme Audit found several irregularities in the project that was granted the green light by the Ministry of Finances.<\/p>\n
Firstly, the project lacked a feasibility study meanwhile, the government did not even have the funds when the contract had already been sealed.<\/p>\n
SPAK is also looking into potential irregularities from the Ministry of Environment, and Tirana City Hall.<\/p>\n
The latter had given its blessing without even deliberating on the project at the municipal council. In other words, the project got the \u2018good-to-go\u2019 only with the confirmation of Tirana Mayor, Erion Veliaj.<\/p>\n
After several arrests at the Fier and Elbasan incinerator sites, SPAK is soon expected to reveal the results of its investigation of the Tirana waste incinerator plant.<\/p>\n
Another file that is being examined is that of concessionary contracts in the public health care sector.<\/p>\n
To be more precise, the case at hand deals with the contract that took over procedures such as sterilization of surgical equipment and operating rooms, a 10-year deal set at for \u20ac120 million.<\/p>\n
Accordingly, SPAK is looking at the entire chain of activities followed by former executives at the Ministry of Health back in 2015. At the time, the ministry was headed by former minister Ilir Beqja.<\/p>\n
