The Albanian Assembly convened at 6 PM as parliamentarians cast their vote for the new president.<\/p>\n

Socialist candidate Bajram Begaj will be voted by secret ballot.<\/p>\n

71 votes are necessary for Begaj\u2019s appointment by the parliament.<\/p>\n

MPs of the ruling majority and 26 from the opposition are attending the plenary session.<\/p>\n

Begaj is also following the session from one of the parliament\u2019s lodges.<\/p>\n

Shortly after the session convened, former PM Sali Berisha wanted to take the podium to contest the procedures followed, but his request was refused by parliament speaker, Lindita Nikolla.<\/p>\n

This led to Berisha leaving the parliament, followed by several members of the opposition.<\/p>\n

Berisha spoke to reporters gathered outside the Assembly and denounced the session as a \u2018flagrant violation of the Constitution\u2019.<\/p>\n

\u201cArticle 167 of the Constitution prohibits active military officials from running for office, or their election in other posts, other than military-related ones\u201d, Berisha said.<\/p>\n

\u201cHis resignation is completely worthless\u201d, he added.<\/p>\n

Also, Berisha claimed that the decree signed by President Meta is not valid as it was signed outside of the country\u2019s borders.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
