The former chairman of the DP, Lulzim Basha, reacted after today\u2019s publication of the news that Russia had allegedly funded the Democratic Party by secretly transferring around $500,000 dollars in 2017, during the time when he was in charge of this party.<\/p>\n
In a Tweet posted shortly after the news broke, Basha said that DP has not received any foreign funding, much less from Russia.<\/p>\n
Basha also emphasized that when such claims circulated in some media at the time, the Democratic Party officially asked the judiciary to investigate these accusations and fully cooperated with the justice system, which ultimately rejected any claims of foreign funding.<\/p>\n
“We are proud of the steadfast partnership with our strategic ally, the USA, and determined to move forward alongside our Euro-Atlantic allies for the consolidation of Western values \u200b\u200band the full integration of Albania into the EU,” wrote Basha, among other things.<\/p>\n
Russia is said to have secretly transferred over $300 million to foreign political parties, leaders and politicians in over 24 countries around the world since 2014.<\/p>\n
The news was reported by the BBC, which cites sources of the American administration, who themselves refer to a report of the US intelligence services.<\/p>\n
According to this source, Russia had spent around $500,000 to support the Democratic Party of Albania in the 2017 elections and also financed parties or candidates in Bosnia, Montenegro and Madagascar.<\/p>\n
