For the first time since the post-war, the 4 northern municipalities of Kosovo, which are inhabited by the majority of Serbs, will be led by leaders of the Albanian community, who are a minority in these areas.<\/p>\n
This came as a result of the elections that were held on Sunday, but which were boycotted by Serbian parties and citizens there, with the support of official Belgrade.<\/p>\n
But what did these votes really produce, which came as a result of the resignation of the Serbs from the institutions of Kosovo.<\/p>\n
According to the journalist Xhemajl Rexha, this process did not bring anything and that there were no winners from this process.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think there are no winner in this weekend\u2019s elections in North of Kosovo. It is obvious that local Serbs there always obey what Belgrade tells them to do and that was the case of this weekend, the very disappointing turnout of voters. It should also be an alert to Pristina Central Government, they cannot really impose Albanian mayors to a population who is overwhelming more than 95% of local Serbs.\u201d<\/p>\n
He says that there is a fear that this could cause damage to Kosovo.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think that this will also serve as e new topic in the ongoing discussions in Brussels between Kosovo and Serbia leaders. As they meet next month in Brussels they will probably try and reach a political solution, but this is not good for Kosovo as it would turn the attention towards crises in the ground and not the bigger picture, which is implementing the Brussels and then Ohrid agreements, which in a way emphasise that Serbia will recognise Kosovo\u2019s right to exist.\u201d<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, citizens in Kosovo are divided in different opinions about what was produced from these elections.<\/p>\n
VOX CITIZENS<\/strong><\/p>\n “Yesterday’s elections in the north, even though they were held without the participation of the Serbian community, the constitution and laws of Kosovo were respected.\u201d<\/p>\n “They have not produced stability and they have not produced the good of the citizens there, especially of the Albanians there.”<\/p>\n However, the Prime Minister of the country, Albin Kurti, does not see it that way. On Monday he congratulated the winners of several elections and has asked them to work for all citizens, even that they were boycotted by the majority of voters there.<\/p>\n “I ask them to work with dedication and serve regardless of ethnicity, origin, religion or gender.
