Charles III will be crowned today king in Britain’s biggest ceremonial event for seven decades, with a big ceremony that dates back 1,000 years.<\/p>\n
Charles will be king after his mother Queen Elizabeth\u2019s death at age 74, last September. He will become the oldest British monarch to wear the 360-year-old St Edward’s Crown as he sits in a 14th century throne in London’s Westminster Abbey.<\/p>\n
His coronation will be attended by around 100 heads of state and dignitaries, including US first lady Jill Biden.<\/p>\n
The ceremony is expected to last two hours and Charles will be formally crowned, presented with a number of ceremonial objects and recognized as King by various representatives of the British state.<\/p>\n
Central London\u2019s parts have been blocked for days, with barriers lining the route that King Charles and Queen Camilla will take in procession from Buckingham Palace, the official London residence of the British monarchy, to Westminster Abbey, the country’s coronation church since year 1066.<\/p>\n
The ceremony will be held with deeply religious affairs, reflecting the fact that Charles is also Supreme Governor of the Church of England. The ceremony will be led by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, the Church’s spiritual leader.<\/p>\n
Charles will also be the first monarch to pray aloud at his coronation and in his prayer he will ask “to be a blessing” to people “of every faith and persuasion”.<\/p>\n
His wife Camilla will also be crowned in a shorter and simpler part of the ceremony.<\/p>\n
