In July 1992, 71% of the population went to the ballot box. The result was close between the Democratic Party and the Socialist Party, which managed to win 45.43% of the votes, while the DP 37.1% of the votes.<\/p>\n
In the elections of October 1996, the SP went through a difficult period, the leader led them from prison and outside the parliament, this because he did not recognize the elections of May 26, held in the same year.<\/p>\n
Although international pressure forced them to participate in the elections, the consequences were big. Only 4 municipalities and 12 municipalities won, compared to the Democrats with 37 municipalities and 310 municipalities. Voter participation was 89.1%.<\/p>\n
In 2001, Albania went to elections after a series of riots caused by pyramid schemes. This situation marked the revival of the Socialist Party, which managed to win. With a turnout of 60%, they took the leadership of 28 main municipalities and 110 municipalities, while PD with 9 city halls and 58 municipalities did not recognize the elections.<\/p>\n
The year 2003 were the closest result of the elections ever, with a margin of 2%. SP won about 410 thousand votes or 34%, while DP won 382 thousand votes or about 32%. From the big cities, the opposition won Elbasa and Kor\u00e7a, but lost Tirana and Durr\u00ebs.<\/p>\n
The race for local government in 2007, plunged the country into political chaos. Edi Rama at the head of the SP refused to enter the elections, with the argument that there was no guarantee for a regular process. This race was called the ‘certificate crisis’, since according to the SP, Berisha intended manipulation of elections by allowing citizens to use civil status certificates as identification documents.<\/p>\n
The president of that time, Alfred Moisiu, initiated an agreement by convincing the opposition and decreeing for the second time the date of the elections. The result was 36 municipalities for DP and 26 for SP, including the large municipalities of Elbasan, Tirana, Durr\u00ebs.<\/p>\n
The 2011 elections will always be remembered for the strong confrontation in Tirana between the leader of the SP, Edi Rama and Lulzim Basha<\/p>\n
Lulzim Basha won against Edi Rama with 81 votes more than him. The participation in the elections was 50.9%. The right-wing coalition, led by the DP, “Alliance for the Citizen”, was declared the winner with 141,723 more votes than the coalition led by the SP, “Alliance for the Future”.<\/p>\n
In 2015, the local elections were held, 2 years after the DP had gone into opposition with a devastating result. On June 21, 2015, elections were held for the first time under the new territorial division.<\/p>\n
The Socialists managed to triumph with a deep margin winning 45 municipalities against the opposition which managed to secure only 15.<\/p>\n
A strong confrontation happened in Tirana, between Halim Kosova and Erion Veliaj, who won 44,000 more votes than the candidate of the Democrats. 47.83% of voters participated in these elections.<\/p>\n
The political crisis that accompanied every election process in Albania in 2019 failed to end with a race of opponents. The opposition left the Assembly and did not enter the race. With a low turnout of 22.6%, the socialists competed with themselves and took over all the municipalities<\/p>\n
