European Union officials are holding a meeting in Brussel on the control of firearms in the Western Balkans region.<\/p>\n
Speaking at the meeting, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, said that the danger coming from these guns is not just a theory.<\/p>\n
\u201cSuch dramatic cases remind us how important it is to tackle the trafficking of light guns,\u201d said Borrell, referring to the consecutive mass shootings in Serbia, adding that it is wrong to think such incidents cannot happen in Europe.<\/p>\n
He emphasized that it is everybody\u2019s responsibility to make Europe safer in such challenging times.<\/p>\n
The EU High Representative also welcomed the campaign that has already started in Serbia, to surrender all illegally owned weapons.<\/p>\n
Borrell also stated the importance of a larger EU commitment in helping the Western Balkans fight against violence and guns trafficking.<\/p>\n
Oftentimes, the EU has drawn attention to the fact that large quantities of illegal weapons finding their way to the European market, originate precisely from the Balkan region, with organized crime networks from these countries being active in the EU.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe all know this activity is a great danger to our peace and stability. It\u2019s a multiple threat and increases the risk of terrorist attacks as well,\u201d Borrell added.<\/p>\n
Present in the meeting, European Commissioner for Home Affairs, Ylva Johansson, also emphasized the importance of measures in order to prevent illegal gun trafficking in the region. Like Borrell, she welcomed the Serbian authorities\u2019 initiative in collecting illegally owned weapons.<\/p>\n
The EU has so far invested 38 million euros to help with gun control activities in the region.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
