The head of the European Union’s foreign policy, Josep Borrell, has announced that he has called the prime minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, and the president of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, for an urgent meeting in Brussels to find a way out of the tense situation in north of Kosovo.<\/p>\n
Through an announcement on Twitter, Borrell has said that there is an urgent need for immediate de-escalation and new elections in the north of Kosovo.<\/p>\n
“I have called the leaders of Serbia and Kosovo to Brussels for urgent meetings to find a way out of the current crisis. We need immediate de-escalation and new elections in the north with the participation of Kosovo Serbs. This is primary for the region and the EU”, Borrell wrote this morning.<\/p>\n
Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti has agreed to meet with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic in Brussels.<\/p>\n
He announced this on Wednesday, while today he is on an official visit to the Vatican.<\/p>\n
After visiting the Holy See, Kurti will travel to Brussels.<\/p>\n
Kurti has indicated that his request will be the release of three Kosovar policemen kidnapped by Serbian forces on June 14 within the territory of Kosovo.<\/p>\n
“I set my itinerary to go to Brussels from Rome tomorrow, confirming my participation in the high-level dialogue meeting called by HR\/VP Borrell. He will insist on the urgent unconditional release of 3 policemen held hostage by Serbia, de-escalation and normalization of relations”, wrote Kurti on Twitter.<\/p>\n
Kurti’s visit to Vatican where he will meet with Pope Francis has been confirmed by the prime minister’s office.<\/p>\n
The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, has decided to accept the invitation of the High Representative of the European Union, Josep Borrell, to go to an urgent meeting in Brussels. But he added that he will not meet with the Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti.<\/p>\n
“I will go to Brussels to talk to Borelli for an hour, two to ten hours, I have nothing to do with Kurti, I will not talk to Kurti, because talking to him makes no sense. He lectures us on philosophy, a bit on Marx and that’s it. Everything else has to do with the persecution of Serbs and lectures on internal political issues in central Serbia,” said Vucic.<\/p>\n
The mediator of the European Union in the dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia, Miroslav Lajcak, said that the crisis management meeting in Brussels will be held, despite the statements of the leaders of both countries.<\/p>\n
“If it was rejected, there would be serious and negative consequences”, he said in a debate held by the Atlantic Council in Washington, where the American envoy for the Western Balkans, Gabriel Escobar, also participated.<\/p>\n
Lajcak added that the meeting he said will be held very soon, will focus only on managing the current crisis.<\/p>\n
