An event in memory of French historian Pierre Cabanes, who passed away a few days ago, was organized at the premises of the Fier Historical Museum.<\/p>\n
He is credited with organizing international congresses on the archaeology and ancient history of Epirus and Southern Illyria in France.<\/p>\n
According to Bashkim Vrekaj, as a friend of Albanian archaeology, the French historian has made another important contribution in the training of young Albanian archaeologists through the granting of study scholarships by the French government.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe contribution of Prof. Cabanes is comprehensive, not only in the field of history with publications on Epirus and Southern Illyria but also in other areas. In the tradition of Leon Rey, he established the Epigraphic Archaeological Mission in Apollonia in 1992, which continues its activities today with excavations and publications. He has also made a significant contribution to the training of young Albanian archaeologists by creating the opportunity for postgraduate studies in France with scholarships from the French government,\u201d said professor Vrekaj.<\/p>\n
Thanks to the Albanian-French mission, excavations in the ancient city of Apollonia resumed, and publications for this ancient city were made possible as well.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, director of the National Archaeological Park of Apollonia Ornela Dyrmishi stated that the historian has done tireless scientific work in promoting the history and ancient culture of Albania at the European level.<\/p>\n
\u201cProf. Cabanes was actually a very good spark for the resumption of excavations in the Archaeological Park of Apollonia, which continue to this day. These discoveries are a new attraction for visitors as they increase the interest in visiting Apollonia. There are many foreign visitors, mainly French,\u201d said Dyrmishi.<\/p>\n
