{"id":56336,"date":"2023-06-26T14:19:33","date_gmt":"2023-06-26T12:19:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/euronews.al\/en\/?p=56336"},"modified":"2023-06-26T14:19:33","modified_gmt":"2023-06-26T12:19:33","slug":"three-policemen-detained-in-serbia-arrive-in-kosovo-after-release","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/euronews.al\/en\/three-policemen-detained-in-serbia-arrive-in-kosovo-after-release\/","title":{"rendered":"Three policemen detained in Serbia, arrive in Kosovo after release"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Three police officers from Kosovo, who were released by the Serbian authorities, arrived in Kosovo via the border crossing in Merdare.<\/p>\n<p>After passing the Serbian checkpoint, they entered in Kosovo Police vehicles and headed towards Pristina without making any statements to the media present at the border crossing point.<\/p>\n<p>Arrested by Serbian forces since June 14, they were released on Monday morning.<\/p>\n<p>The Serbian justice charged the three police officers, namely Beqir Sefa, Mustaf\u00eb Shemi, and Rifat Zeka with the criminal offense of production, possession, storage, and illegal trafficking of firearms and explosive materials, which carries a sentence of up to 12 years in prison.<\/p>\n<p>They were placed under pretrial detention on June 16, but the duration was not clear.<\/p>\n<p>Their lawyer stated that the indictment against them has been confirmed, but they will defend themselves freely.<\/p>\n<p>The Supreme Court in Kraljevo \u2013 a city in central Serbia where the three police officers were held \u2013 also confirmed the suspension of pretrial detention measures against them.<\/p>\n<p>The arrest of the three police officers sparked numerous reactions both in Kosovo and the international community, which continuously demanded their release.<\/p>\n<p>The Government of Kosovo claimed that they were arrested on its territory, specifically abducted, but Serbia denied this, stating that the officers had entered their territory.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Official Pristina: Serbian aggression must be held accountable<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Prime Minister of Kosovo Albin Kurti said that \u201cthis abduction constitutes a serious violation of human rights and should be condemned\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSerbian aggression must be held accountable,\u201d he said, expressing his joy for the return of the officers to their families.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">We confirm that the 3 kidnapped police officers have been released. Even though we are joyous that they get to return to their families, this abduction consists of a serious human rights violation &amp; must be reprimanded. We highly appreciate the step of President <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/avucic?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@avucic<\/a>,\u2026<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Orb\u00e1n Viktor (@PM_ViktorOrban) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PM_ViktorOrban\/status\/1673248191339282433?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 26, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>During the meeting held on June 20, Orb\u00e1n asked Vu\u010di\u0107 to release the police officers, stating that \u201cSerbia\u2019s enemies are eager to harm Serbia\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>High tensions<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Government of Kosovo expressed its conviction that the Serbian authorities \u201cabducted\u201d the three police officers due to the arrest of the Serb Milan Milenkovi\u0107 by the Kosovo Police on June 13, under suspicion of organizing violence against NATO\u2019s mission, KFOR, in northern Kosovo.<\/p>\n<p>The situation in this predominantly Serbian-populated area has been tense since the end of May when the Kosovo Police assisted Albanian mayors in entering their offices there despite the resistance of local residents.<\/p>\n<p>These facilities are also used by parallel Serbian structures.<\/p>\n<p>Tensions escalated on May 29 when Serbian protesters clashed with KFOR soldiers. Dozens of injuries were reported on both sides.<\/p>\n<p>The international community has continuously urged Kosovo to de-escalate the situation, specifically by withdrawing special police units from the north, organizing new local elections, and returning to dialogue for the normalization of relations with Serbia.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, official Belgrade demands to ensure the unconditioned participation of Serbs in possible local elections.<\/p>\n<p>The extraordinary elections held in April, from which Albanian mayors emerged, were boycotted by the Serbian community.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Three police officers from Kosovo, who were released by the Serbian authorities, arrived in Kosovo via the border crossing in Merdare.
