The process of integration of the countries of the Western Balkans into the European Union, the security situation in Kosovo and the process of normalization of Kosovo-Serbia relations will be among the topics that will be discussed by the leaders of the EU member states in a meeting that will take place on Thursday and Friday in Brussels.<\/p>\n
It is expected that in this meeting, which coincides with the 20th anniversary of the Thessaloniki Summit, where the promise was made for the European perspective of the Western Balkans, the commitment to their integration into the EU will be repeated. But, at the same time, concern is also expected to be expressed about the increased tensions in the north of Kosovo.<\/p>\n
In this area inhabited by a majority of Serbs, the local residents have been protesting since the end of May against the Albanian mayors of the municipalities.<\/p>\n
Tensions have also culminated in violent clashes between Serbian protesters and soldiers of the NATO mission, KFOR.<\/p>\n
There were also reports of attacks with hand grenades and other means.<\/p>\n
Kosovo and Serbia have blamed each other for the created situation.<\/p>\n
Diplomatic sources expect European leaders to call on the two countries to immediately reduce tensions and return to dialogue to normalize relations. In the event that they do not prove their will for prudent and constructive behavior, they are expected to be warned about the consequences.<\/p>\n
