In marking the Independence Day of the United States of America at the American Embassy in Pristina, American Ambassador Jeffrey Hovenier started his speech by quoting a part of the Declaration of Independence of Kosovo.<\/p>\n
In this part of declaration it is stated that: “Kosovo is declared a democratic, secular and multi-ethnic Republic, guided by the principles of non-discrimination and equal protection under the law. We will protect and promote the rights of all communities in Kosovo and create the necessary conditions for their effective participation in political and decision-making processes”.<\/p>\n
“This eloquent text is part of the promise of Kosovo and the basis of its independence. I hope we can agree that sometimes Kosovo has not fulfilled the promises of these ideals”, said Hovenier.<\/p>\n
He said that the United States is proud of the support it has given to the people of Kosovo in conceiving, and then realizing the vision of its independence, and that it will remain steadfast in continuing this support.<\/p>\n
“In this spirit, I want to affirm that the United States and our partners stand by the people of Kosovo in the advancement and achievement of its founding vision: the democratic, sovereign, secular, multi-ethnic state”, said Hovenier.<\/p>\n
The ambassador emphasized that the US and Western partners support Kosovo by offering advice, and even though they ask for “things that seem or are really difficult to do”, but that they do so in accordance with the “long-term commitment to support the people of Kosovo and to approach those very ambitious ideals which they have created for themselves\u201d.<\/p>\n
“So today, as we celebrate the 247th anniversary of the United States of America as a free, sovereign, independent state, we also want to celebrate together, as Kosovo achieved its well-deserved independence; the extraordinary progress that the people of Kosovo have made in this short period of time, and the promise of further progress for the benefit of all the people of Kosovo”, he said.<\/p>\n
The speech of the American ambassador comes at a time when relations between Kosovo and other international partners are at a low point.<\/p>\n
