As the Democratic Party prepares to hold elections and choose its new chairman on July 29, the division within the party members continues to deepen.<\/p>\n
While talking to the media, two Democrat MPs, namely Bledion Nallbati and Lefter G\u00ebshtenja have asked current Secretary-General Gazment Bardhi, who is also Chairman of the Parliamentary Group, to exercise his statutory powers in the best interests of the party and stop the Democratic Party\u2019s further division.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe, the deputies, members of the Presidency, and members of the National Council of the Democratic Party, concerned about the unilateral and divisive actions of a small faction within the Democratic Party, taking responsibility for the future of democrats and the Democratic Party, firmly believe that deepening divisions irreparably harm the DP and that strengthening the party is the only objective that should unite us all, aware that the overwhelming majority of DP members are tired of internal conflicts and seek solutions from their representatives, as division only strengthens Edi Rama\u2019s corrupt regime. In light of this, we took the initiative to individually contact and assess the will of each legitimate member of the National Council, as the highest governing body of the party between two Congresses.<\/p>\n
After contacting and evaluating the will of the National Council members according to the official list deposited and registered at the Office of Political Parties Registry at the Court of First Instance of Tirana, and officially confirmed by statutory authorities, it resulted that, 276 members of the National Council out of a total of 453 members in office, were either excluded without a decision from the Council\u2019s meeting, recognized but did not participate in the meeting, or were in the meeting but did not consider it legitimate, disagreeing with \u2018decisions made without a quorum\u2019.<\/p>\n
With the responsibility to protect the interests of democrats and the Democratic Party, and the concern that divisive actions do not benefit the DP, the members of the National Council expressed their will and called on the General Secretary of the DP to exercise the powers granted by the Statute of the Democratic Party.<\/p>\n
On Friday, July 21, 2023, we officially submitted a detailed report to the General Secretary, along with a request to exercise his statutory powers. Convinced that divisive actions, exclusions, unilateralism, and haste do not contribute to the resurgence of the DP, we take this opportunity to urge the General Secretary to exercise the powers granted by the Statute and take any statutory initiatives to prevent further division within the Democratic Party.\u201d<\/p>\n
The declaration is signed by seven Democrat MPs, including Ramadan Likaj, Dashnor Sula, Xhelal Mziu, Helidon Bushati and Saimir Korreshi.<\/p>\n In the race for the leadership of the DP, only Lulzim Basha and Gjergj Hani have submitted their candidacies.
