He currently faces trial in Albania\u2019s Special Court, charged with \u201cactive corruption in elections\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis communicated to the Greek state television network <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ertnews.gr\/roi-idiseon\/g-gerapetritis-me-tin-tourkia-exoume-mia-kai-themeliodi-diafora-i-alvania-pyrovolei-ta-podia-tis-me-tin-ypothesi-mpeleri\/\"><strong>ERT<\/strong><\/a> that \u201cAlbania\u2019s refusal to take the necessary steps to free Beleri and, more crucially, to prevent his swearing-in, which could potentially lead to his dismissal, would result in a significant deterioration of bilateral relations with Albania\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Gerapetritis restated Greece\u2019s position in his statement, asserting that \u201cBeleri\u2019s pretrial detention is illegal and undermines the principles of the rule of law\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe path toward Albania\u2019s accession to the European Union cannot proceed when such a violation of the rule of law and the presumption of Mr. Beleri\u2019s innocence exists,\u201d declared Greek Foreign Minister Gerapetritis.<\/p>\n<p>As per the head of Greek diplomacy, \u201cthe handling of this matter presents a substantial obstacle to Albania\u2019s advancement toward the European community. The resulting tension is detrimental to our neighboring country\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Albania\u2019s Special Prosecutor\u2019s Office recently announced the conclusion of investigations and the referral of the case involving Fredi Beleri, the elected mayor of Himara, to trial on charges of \u201cactive corruption in elections\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Beleri\u2019s arrest took place just two days before the local elections on May 14, under suspicion of vote-buying.
