Albanian exporters have reported their first financial losses attributed to the depreciation of the euro in comparison to the Albanian lek exchange rate.<\/p>\n
In a study titled \u201cThe Necessity of Adjusting the Monetary Policy Structure of Albania\u2019s Central Bank\u201d, which was prepared by members of the Unified Office of Business Exports (ZUBE), it has been calculated that Albanian exporters incurred losses of approximately 34.8 million euros during the period from January to June 2023 due to the depreciation of the euro.<\/p>\n
This concerning trend reveals ongoing financial setbacks for Albanian exporters, primarily caused by fluctuations in the exchange rate. These setbacks have subsequently resulted in other adverse socio-economic consequences, including reduced liquidity for sourcing, a downsizing of the workforce, and a ripple effect that impacts various economic aspects such as reduced consumer spending and decreased investments, the study highlights.<\/p>\n
The study also identifies the labor-intensive sectors of clothing and footwear as being among the hardest hit by losses resulting from exchange rate fluctuations. These sectors collectively employ approximately 200,000 individuals.<\/p>\n
According to ZUBE\u2019s analysis, garment manufacturing enterprises, grappling with the challenges posed by the exchange rate, may find it necessary to reduce their workforce.<\/p>\n
Using the minimum wage as a reference point (a characteristic of this sector), concrete estimates can be made regarding the potential reduction in the number of employees at these businesses. Such reductions would primarily be driven by the difficulties posed by exchange rate fluctuations as these businesses strive to maintain sustainable macroeconomic indicators, the study further notes.<\/p>\n
In light of these challenges faced by exporters, the study suggests a series of measures to be taken by the Bank of Albania and other state institutions. These measures range from the implementation of export support programs to interventions by the Bank of Albania to establish an appropriate exchange rate policy that preserves the competitiveness of the national currency.<\/p>\n
In response to these economic concerns, associations representing exporters have reached out to Prime Minister Edi Rama, urging the government to take actions aimed at alleviating the severe consequences experienced by manufacturing companies engaged in exports.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
