The Albanian border police at Kakavija, situated on the border with Greece, have recently confiscated approximately 30,000 euros that were not declared. This comes in the midst of a rising trend in cases of apprehending undeclared money this year.<\/p>\n
In August alone, the Albanian border police reported seizing around 295,000 euros and over 113,000 pounds, all of which had not been declared at various border crossing points. Those found in possession of these undisclosed sums now face legal consequences.<\/p>\n
Albanian legislation mandates that individuals entering or leaving the country must declare any financial amounts exceeding 10,000 euros or their equivalent in other currencies.<\/p>\n
Data from the police indicates that the total amount of money seized as \u201cundeclared\u201d at the border crossings during this year has surpassed 1.8 million euros. The majority of these cases occurred at the Port of Durr\u00ebs, Tirana\u2019s Rinas Airport, and the Kakavija Border Crossing Point.<\/p>\n
These figures significantly exceed those from previous years. Furthermore, in most instances, police investigations have honed in on suspicions that the money has illicit origins stemming from criminal activities abroad.<\/p>\n
A recent report from Italian Anti-Drug authorities has shed light on the tactics employed by Albanian criminal networks to funnel money into Albania. This scheme primarily utilizes transport means passing through the ports of Vlora and Durr\u00ebs.<\/p>\n
In this setup, transporters derive profit based on a percentage of the total sum they manage to introduce into Albania.<\/p>\n
The Albanian Customs Administration recorded a total of 37 cases of non-declaration of monetary values at border crossings in 2022, with 14 cases detected at Rinas Airport and 23 at land and sea border crossings.<\/p>\n
According to the annual report from Albanian customs, in 2022, approximately 1.3 million euros and 164,000 pounds were seized. In 2021, the figures stood at around 1.3 million euros, approximately 392,000 pounds, and 32,000 dollars.<\/p>\n
For the year 2022, the majority of cases were related to the confiscation of monetary sums upon entry at border points, totaling 28 cases, with an additional 9 cases upon exit.<\/p>\n
