The Special Prosecutor\u2019s Office of Kosovo reported on Wednesday that it had apprehended three individuals from the Serbian community on suspicion of committing \u201cwar crimes against the civilian population\u201d.<\/p>\n
In a statement, the Special Prosecutor noted that the three detainees had been placed in custody for up to 48 hours. However, the statement did not specify the nature of the alleged war crimes.<\/p>\n
According to Veton Elshani, Deputy Director of the Kosovo Police for the northern region, two of the three individuals taken into custody hail from municipalities in the predominantly Serbian-inhabited northern regions, specifically North Mitrovica and Zvecan.<\/p>\n
The Serb List, the principal political party representing Serbs in Kosovo, and the Office for Kosovo within the Serbian Government swiftly responded to these arrests, asserting that they were politically motivated.<\/p>\n
The Serb List accused Kosovo\u2019s Prime Minister Albin Kurti of using violence and force to address ongoing political issues and of treating Serbs in Kosovo as obstacles in the negotiation process, although they did not specify the particular war crimes the detainees are alleged to have committed.<\/p>\n
The Office for Kosovo within the Serbian Government also claimed that the arrests were carried out with the intention of instigating tensions and generating fresh crises in the region.<\/p>\n
At a press briefing in Belgrade, the Director of this Office, Petar Petkovi\u0107, asserted that the detention of the three Serbs constituted a form of \u201cethnic cleansing\u201d by Kurti\u2019s government.<\/p>\n
Petkovi\u0107 disclosed that he had received instructions from Serbian President Aleksandar Vu\u010di\u0107 to initiate the process for convening an urgent session of the United Nations Security Council concerning the situation in Kosovo. He indicated that it would only be a matter of days before the request was submitted and the session convened.<\/p>\n
In early July, Vu\u010di\u0107 had announced his intention to call for an urgent session of the Security Council regarding developments in Kosovo.<\/p>\n
Since the conclusion of the last Kosovo war, approximately 70 individuals have been convicted of war crimes by local and international authorities.<\/p>\n
Between 2000 and 2008, investigations into war crimes in Kosovo were conducted by the United Nations Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK). Subsequently, from 2008 onward, the responsibility for such investigations shifted to the European Union Rule of Law Mission in Kosovo (EULEX).<\/p>\n
In 2018, EULEX transferred jurisdiction over these cases to the Prosecutor\u2019s Office of Kosovo and local courts.<\/p>\n
