Bernd Fischer, one of the most famous history researchers, held a discussion in Tirana about his book “Nj\u00eb histori e p\u00ebrmbledhur e Shqip\u00ebris\u00eb” which means a ‘Summary History of Albania’. He also commented on the developments in Kosovo, stating that there should be more pressure on Serbia to recognize independence.<\/p>\n
Well-known German historian and researcher of Albanian history, Bernd J. Fischer held a conversation with colleagues, Albanian historians, and readers about the book “Nj\u00eb histori e p\u00ebrmbledhur e Shqip\u00ebris\u00eb”, published a year ago with co-author researcher Oliver Jens Schmitt.<\/p>\n
The book, the publication of which was requested by the University of Cambridge, is the history of the Albanian state, divided into two parts to present the complex history of Albania. The author says that the history of the Albanian state cannot be told without first understanding the history of the Albanian people.<\/p>\n
“The first part deals with their relations with the Romans, Byzantines, Ottomans, Venetians and the modern great powers and also with their relations with other Balkan Slavic, Greek and Romanian nations including the complex issues of language and religion.<\/p>\n
The second part of the book is the history of the Albanian state, of course it begins with independence and then includes the horrors of the first world war, the critical interwar period under the rule of King Ahmet Zogu, the second world war, Enver Hoxha’s regime and the post-communist recovery, -said Bernd Jurgen Fischer.<\/p>\n
The authors have objectively divided the nationalist interpretations and by means of the facts they refute the abusive theses that throw the idea of \u200b\u200ba made-up state.<\/p>\n
Part of the conversation was also the Director of the National Library, Pirro Misha, who commented on the book as an added value of Albanian studies.<\/p>\n
“It is a book that contributes a lot to Albanian studies and I think it is a very important contribution to Albanian historiography. Of course it will open controversy and debate, but that is the purpose of a book. I think it’s a thought-provoking book because it challenges some of the traditional narratives of so-called official historiography. It is a book where many pages of our history are presented differently from textbooks”, said Pirro Misha.<\/p>\n
Regarding the current situation in Kosovo, historian Bernd J. Fischer emphasized that he feels sorry that more pressure is needed on Serbia to fix their relations with Kosovo.<\/p>\n
“I was in Kosovo and I talked to people in Pristina, and there are many different views on who is responsible, I mean who is behind the event.<\/p>\n
I think it is a serious de-escalation of relations between Serbia and Kosovo. I certainly hope that the result is maybe a little more pressure on Serbia to fix their relations with Kosovo and then eventually to recognize Kosovo as an independent state.<\/p>\n
I’m not sure that this will be the result, but we certainly hope so, and obviously, like everyone else, I’m sorry for the loss of life and I hope this doesn’t happen again,” said Bernd Jurgen Fisher.<\/p>\n
The effort of two authors, Bernd J. Fischer and Oliver Jens Schmitt to debunk a number of myths of traditional narratives, will open debates and reactions, but will certainly contribute to the way we see our history.<\/p>\n
