{"id":62134,"date":"2023-10-31T11:52:00","date_gmt":"2023-10-31T10:52:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/euronews.al\/en\/?p=62134"},"modified":"2023-10-31T11:52:00","modified_gmt":"2023-10-31T10:52:00","slug":"five-volume-series-of-albania-during-20th-century-published-in-tirana","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/euronews.al\/en\/five-volume-series-of-albania-during-20th-century-published-in-tirana\/","title":{"rendered":"Five-volume series of Albania during 20th century published in Tirana"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Albanian Academy of Albanological Studies\u2019 Institute of History celebrated the full publication of the five-volume series \u201cThe history of Albanians during the 20<sup>th<\/sup> century\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>This monumental work was the collaborative effort of 46 dedicated researchers from Tirana, Pristina, Tetovo, and the diaspora, spanning over several years.<\/p>\n<p>The event, attended by Albanian President Bajram Begaj, underlined the profound role that history plays in shaping the present and the future while cautioning against repeating past mistakes.<\/p>\n<p>President Begaj emphasized that beyond forging the Albanian national identity, history serves as a wellspring of contemporary lessons, ensuring that the pitfalls of the past do not hinder future progress.<\/p>\n<p>For Albania, a nation that experienced one of the darkest periods in its history, particularly during the latter half of the 20<sup>th<\/sup> century, having an unadulterated historical account is of paramount significance, President Begaj highlighted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe traversed through one of the bleakest periods, where not only history was distorted but also the spirit of the Albanians. Father Zef Pllumi once wrote in his book \u2018Live to Tell\u2019 that we must neither forget what transpired nor downplay it by relativizing the negative aspects. It is essential that we avoid a recurrence of the past, making memory a matter of great importance,\u201d President Begaj stated.<\/p>\n<p>Historians assembled at the event pointed out that the challenge was to systematically and professionally study 20<sup>th<\/sup>-century history, a period profoundly manipulated by political interference and the communist regime\u2019s ideology.<\/p>\n<p>The published series provides a comprehensive overview of events throughout the past century, Professor Beqir Meta noted. It signifies a complete departure from the historiography inherited from the communist era, encompassing various historical phases, starting with early-century nationalism, independence, the 1920s, the monarchy, World War II, the communist regime, its fall, and the transition to democracy. Importantly, the history of Kosovo is integrated into this comprehensive study.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cParticularly for Kosovo, events, key factors, and significant actors have been meticulously analyzed, including the Kosovo Committee, which has also been examined in relation to the Albanian state, a feat never before undertaken. The events that unfolded in Kosovo during World War II, the state administration established there, the educational system created, protection of the civilian population in the midst of a difficult period, the reoccupation of Kosovo, and the aftermath of Serbian violence in Kosovo are all incorporated in the fifth volume,\u201d emphasized researcher Meta.<\/p>\n<p>The speakers underscored that Albania\u2019s European prospects hinge on the values upheld by the Albanian people. Therefore, in-depth historical research and the exposure of historical truths assume paramount importance.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Afrim Krasniqi, a researcher and the director of the Institute of History at the Albanological Studies Academy, highlighted that this book is the fruit of unrestricted academic freedom. The authors have delivered a publication of exceptional scholarly value, free from any attempts to politicize historiography.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe publication we are presenting neither represents nor enforces an official history of Albania, for there can be no such official history. Perhaps, and indeed, it is not a conclusive publication. In fact, future publications are highly likely. However, it constitutes a scientific product, and science is always open to debate, arguments, and new reference sources. It encourages alternative perspectives, which is a positive aspect for the study of history within an open society,\u201d stated Krasniqi.<\/p>\n<p>The authors of the publication, \u201cThe history of Albanians during the 20<sup>th<\/sup> century\u201d, comprise numerous researchers from Albania, Kosovo, North Macedonia, and the diaspora.<\/p>\n<p>Speakers emphasized that their collective efforts were marked by dedication and professionalism over several years, during which they consulted a wealth of archival sources, including Serbian, Bulgarian, Russian, Macedonian, American, Italian, British, and French archives, in addition to Albania\u2019s own documentary archives that remained underutilized during the communist era.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Albanian Academy of Albanological Studies\u2019 Institute of History celebrated the full publication of the five-volume series \u201cThe history of Albanians during the 20th century\u201d.
