The primary focus is on the alarming surge of fake 2-euro coins.

The urgency arises as the 2-euro coin has become a major concern, prompting all financial and security institutions to unite in declaring a concerted “war” against the influx of counterfeit currency.

Following discussions, the involved parties have reached an agreement on an action plan. This plan involves implementing preventive and regulatory measures within their respective areas of responsibility, focusing on coin usage and enhancing financial security. The Central Bank is set to review the coin deposit fee, while institutions will strengthen inter-institutional cooperation and promote the use of electronic payment methods through financial education campaigns.

Citizens are strongly advised to minimize the use of cash, especially the 2-euro coin, and instead, prioritize the use of bank cards during transactions.

Concrete actions are also expected from banks and other financial institutions to bolster internal capabilities in addressing this issue and improve communication with relevant authorities.

The ongoing refusal of the 2-euro coin, even by public companies, has brought attention to the severity of the situation. Entities such as the Regional Water Utility “Prishtina” and “Prishtina Parking” have publicly announced their decision not to accept the 2-euro coin for payment.

These actions have prompted the Kosovo Police, the Kosovo Forensic Agency, and other law enforcement agencies to intensify efforts in seizing suspected counterfeit currency. Notably, a recent case involved the deposit of 251 suspected counterfeit 2-euro coins in a Kosovo bank, bringing the issue closer to the financial sector.

The counterfeit money predicament extends beyond physical transactions, infiltrating banking institutions. Instances of counterfeit 2-euro coins being deposited in banks have raised concerns, emphasizing the need for heightened vigilance and improved detection mechanisms.

Despite these efforts, the prevalence of counterfeit money in Kosovo remains a significant challenge. Reports indicate that hundreds of thousands of euros, suspected to be counterfeit, are circulating in the market. The Kosovo Police has been actively addressing this issue, sending numerous cases to prosecutors and making arrests related to counterfeit money.

The rise of counterfeit money is not confined to physical currency, as social media platforms, particularly TikTok, have become spaces where individuals openly advertise and discuss the trade of counterfeit euros.

However, authorities have warned citizens to exercise caution and avoid falling victim to fraudulent schemes.

In a coordinated effort, the Central Bank of Kosovo, alongside the Kosovo Police, the Kosovo Forensic Agency, Kosovo Customs, the Kosovo Tax Administration, the Financial Intelligence Unit, the Market Inspectorate, and the Kosovo Intelligence Agency, has urgently convened to address the increasing circulation of counterfeit money in the country.
