A spokesperson for the U.S. Department of State provided this perspective in response to a query from Voice of America regarding Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky\u2019s recent statement suggesting that \u201cRussia might seek to instigate a conflict in the Western Balkans\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are dedicated to collaborating with Western Balkan countries, our European allies, and the global community to promote reforms in governance, rule of law, electoral processes, and anti-corruption measures. These efforts aim to diminish the potential for adverse Russian influence and foster sustainable peace, stability, and prosperity in the region,\u201d stated the U.S. Department of State spokesperson.<\/p>\n
The spokesperson underscored that the sanctions imposed by the U.S. Department of State and the Treasury last week specifically targeted the intersection of negative Russian influence and corruption.<\/p>\n
Pointing to the U.S. Government\u2019s designation of Serbian politicians as undesirable individuals and the imposition of sanctions on 12 entities in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, and North Macedonia linked to negative Russian influence and corruption, the spokesperson emphasized that these actions impede the region\u2019s progress toward EU membership and a more prosperous future.<\/p>\n

Following President Zelensky\u2019s remarks, EU spokesperson Peter Stano acknowledged that Russian interference in the Western Balkans is not a new concern.<\/p>\n
\u201cRussia is employing various tactics, including sowing discontent, fostering political instability, external interference, and disinformation.
