The Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, said on Thursday that even 24 years after the war, Kosovo still does not know the economic, emotional and psychological damage caused by the last war.<\/p>\n
He made these statements at the first official open meeting regarding the Institute for the Research of Crimes Committed during the War, which is expected to be operationalized soon.<\/p>\n
In the last war in Kosovo, Serbian forces have killed more than 13,000 people and more than 6,000 are still missing.<\/p>\n
\u201cNo one should pretend that we will easily solve all the problems that have been caused for 24 years. It will be hard, very hard. People are tired, victims have lost faith in the system, generations are dying every day, and thus the primary memory of the war is being lost. This is a great danger, which threatens us, and which we dare not allow to happen”.<\/p>\n
Kurti said that devastating damages have been caused to Kosovo, which have not yet been measured.<\/p>\n
“Even today, 24 years after the war, we do not have a figure that could tell us what is the economic damage that the war has caused to our country. The situation is even worse in relation to the emotional and psychological damage, which we have not addressed at all for these years”.<\/p>\n
While presenting the work of the Institute, Kurti said that it will have its own budget line and experts in the field.<\/p>\n
“Peace requires justice, but also rehabilitation. Neither has happened in Kosovo and the victims of the war deserve both”, said Kurti, among other things.<\/p>\n
Since the end of the last war in Kosovo, about 70 people have been convicted of war crimes before local and international institutions.<\/p>\n
From 2000 to 2008, war crimes in Kosovo were investigated by the United Nations Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK), while from 2008, by the European Union Rule of Law Mission (EULEX).<\/p>\n
In 2018, this mission submitted the cases to the Kosovo Prosecutor’s Office and local courts.\/REL<\/p>\n
