Serbia goes to general elections on Sunday, the fifth in a decade, with the opposition challenging the dominance of populist President Aleksandar Vu\u010di\u0107 and his party, at a time of political and social tensions linked to the country’s leadership.<\/p>\n
Firstly scheduled for April 30, 2026, Vu\u010di\u0107 himself called for early elections. The president won the presidential elections two years ago with about 60% of the votes and now, without being a candidate, he leads the Serbian Progressive Party, SNS.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, 8 pro-European opposition formations have united for the first time under the slogan “Serbia against violence”, or SPN.<\/p>\n
The opposition hopes to win Belgrade in local elections, and if it achieves its goal, it will be a symbolic victory against the regime of Vu\u010di\u0107, who has been prime minister from 2014 to 2017 and president since 2017.<\/p>\n
The latest polls conducted this week speak of a “technical connection” between the official bloc consisting of Vu\u010di\u0107’s SNS and the Socialist Party and the opposition bloc formed by the SPN and 3 small parties.<\/p>\n
They give the SNS 40 percent of the votes, while the opposition SPN about 26%, ahead of the Socialists of Ivica Dacic with 9%, and other opposition entities between 3 and 6.5%.<\/p>\n
