The mission of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in Kosovo, KFOR, has confirmed that it has increased the number of soldiers by around 1,000 and has been reinforced with heavier machinery, following the terrorist attack in Banjska on September 24.<\/p>\n
In a response about the period when can happen, KFOR has said it does not speculate on the possibility of another possible attack in the north, following the alarm given by state leaders in recent weeks.<\/p>\n
“We will not speculate on any future scenario. We are in close contact with the institutions in Kosovo and with the security organizations of Kosovo, as well as with other parties, including the EU Mission for the Rule of Law (EULEX), the Chief of Staff of the Serbian Armed Forces, the OSCE- in and the UN”, says KFOR’s response.<\/p>\n
In response, it was also said that patrolling along the Kosovo-Serbia border has been tripled. KFOR has said that it remains focused on implementing its mandate to provide security in Kosovo.<\/p>\n
“After increasing tensions in recent months, NATO has deployed 1,000 additional troops and heavier equipment. We have quadrupled the presence of KFOR in the north of Kosovo and tripled the number of patrols, including along the administrative border line. These are measured steps to ensure that the KFOR mission has the necessary resources to handle any scenario and continue to implement its UN mandate,” the response further states.<\/p>\n
KFOR has said that it has close cooperation with the Kosovo Police and EULEX to prevent possible escalation and that they are ready to respond to any challenge.<\/p>\n
According to KFOR, the visit of the general secretary of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, last month to Kosovo, was a clear message that tensions should be reduced and there should be restraint from the actions that lead to the escalation of the situation.<\/p>\n
At the end of September, policeman Afrim Bunjaku was killed in an attack organized by armed Serbs. In the subsequent action, three attackers were killed by the Police, while most of the group managed to escape.<\/p>\n
Since that time, Kosovo’s leaders have continuously warned of an increased military presence from Serbia along the border with Kosovo.<\/p>\n
