In 2022, the region with the highest life expectancy at birth for men was Tirana, with 81.0 years, while the region with the lowest indicator was Gjirokastra, with 72.5 years.<\/p>\n
In the same year, the region with the highest life expectancy at birth for women was Tirana, with 84.5 years, while the region with the lowest indicator was Gjirokastra, with 77.9 years.<\/p>\n
According to the Institute of Statistics (INSTAT), in 2022, life expectancy at birth in Albania for the entire population was 79.1 years. It was 77.3 years for men and 80.9 years for women. This means that women are expected to live about 4 years longer than men.<\/p>\n
The regions of Tirana, Durr\u00ebs, and Kuk\u00ebs have the highest life expectancy in the country. The central population lives longer also due to the concentration of public health services.<\/p>\n
Life expectancy has significantly improved since the middle of the last century. Albanians in the 1950s had an average life expectancy of only 54.4 years according to official INSTAT data. However, from that time until 2022, life expectancy increased by 45%.<\/p>\n
Historical data on life expectancy in the last 70 years show that the greatest improvement occurred in the two decades from 1950 to 1970, with an increase of 18 years or 33%.<\/p>\n
From 54.4 years in 1950, the average life expectancy in 1970 reached 72.3 years. Since then, the life expectancy indicator in the country has increased at a slow pace.<\/p>\n
INSTAT predicts that by the end of 2030, the average life expectancy for Albanian men will be 80 years and for women 83.5 years.<\/p>\n
Although the possibility of having a healthy life in Albania, as in the 1960s, where pollution and lack of food safety were not as prevalent as today, Albanians have become longer-lived.<\/p>\n
Changes in lifestyle have increased the burden of diseases that were rare during the communist era. For some, it seems that medicine has progressed, increasing the life expectancy of Albanians by half a century by 17 years.<\/p>\n
Some evidence from the World Health Organization database (Healthfor All database) shows that mortality from lung cancer in Albania in the 1980s was much lower than in most other European countries. The difference between men and women in life expectancy in Eastern European countries is strongly influenced by changes in risk factors, primarily smoking, alcohol abuse, and road traffic accidents.<\/p>\n
