The unusual departure of young people from Albania, mainly for emigration, is not just a social and economic problem but also negatively affects the quality of democracy in the country, according to a recent analysis by the Regional Cooperation Council (RCC) functioning under the Berlin Process.<\/p>\n
Youth emigration for years has created problems in the job market but also implies the erosion of democracy and democratic processes in the country, the RCC points out.<\/p>\n
The study estimates that the young population in Albania (aged 14-29) has decreased by 2.5% in the last four years. Surveys on potential emigration have revealed that 71% of young people are considering emigration in their short-term and medium-term plans.<\/p>\n
In 2022, about 46,460 Albanians emigrated, marking a 10.5% increase compared to 2021. The majority, around 36,000, were young individuals.<\/p>\n
Economic and social aspects contribute to this trend. Youth emigration is fueled by concerns about the quality of life, the standard of education, and the lack of employment opportunities.<\/p>\n
According to the Institute of Statistics (INSTAT) data from 2011 to 2022, over 512,000 people have emigrated from the country, with about 70% of them being young people.<\/p>\n
Youth emigration is a wound that will persist in the years to come, according to surveys. However, Albania\u2019s policies to empower young people are not accompanied by financial support.<\/p>\n
It is now evident that emigration is affecting the youth, but Albania lacks accurate data on their number and regional distribution.<\/p>\n
INSTAT conducts population surveys at regular intervals to provide updated demographic data. These research initiatives are essential for monitoring population changes and tracking demographic trends.<\/p>\n
The latest population census was conducted in 2011, and another was carried out in 2023, but INSTAT violated the rule by postponing the publication of the results to June 2024 when the initial calendar predicted that preliminary census data would be published in December 2023.<\/p>\n
